Desert Vista’s Smedley survives friendly fire

Phoenix Desert Vista catcher Sean Smedley got roughed up Tuesday, but not by the opposition. Smedley was accidently clipped in the mouth by a teammate swinging a bat late in the Thunder’s 11-5 baseball victory over Mesa Red Mountain. Smedley lost a front tooth to the swing and for a few moments coach Stan Luketich didn’t know what happened.

“I saw he was bent over and thought he was sick,” Luketich said. “I started to think we can’t lost him because our other catcher was DHing. i didn’t know he had a took chipped or knocked out.”

Smedley went to the dentist on Wednesday and got a replacement tooth. He was back in action Wednesday against Phoenix Central and Thursday vs. Scottsdale Desert Mountain. The Thunder won both games and have won their last nine games in a row.
